Colour

  2. Choose a soft black with a warm undertone rather than pure black.
  3. Try deep navy or ink for a dark room with a little colour.
  4. Use dark olive for a moody, natural feel.
  5. Paint trim and doors the same shade for calm continuity.
  6. Pick a matte or chalky finish for depth.

Bedding and textiles

  1. Layer washed linen bedding in charcoal and grey.
  2. Add a chunky knit throw for texture.
  3. Use velvet cushions for a soft sheen.
  4. Hang heavy blackout curtains in the wall colour.
  5. Lay a thick wool or shag rug underfoot.

Lighting

  1. Use at least three warm lamps at different heights.
  2. Add plug-in wall sconces beside the bed.
  3. Hang a warm pendant in a corner rather than the centre.
  4. Use LED candles for a flickering glow.
  5. Choose 2200K to 2700K bulbs for amber warmth.

Contrast and decor

  1. Add one cream or oatmeal element like a rug or throw.
  2. Bring in warm wood furniture to soften the dark walls.
  3. Hang moody art in dark frames.
  4. Stack books on nightstands and shelves.
  5. Use brass or aged gold accents for subtle shine.

Finishing touches

  1. Add dried branches or flowers for texture.
  2. Use a large mirror to bounce lamplight.
  3. Keep surfaces clear so the room feels calm.
  4. Add a plant that copes with low light, such as a ZZ plant.

Tip: If you use real candles, keep them on a stable tray away from curtains and bedding and never leave them burning when you fall asleep. LED candles give the same glow with no fire risk.
