The right wall colour can make a bedroom feel calmer, larger or more luxurious before you buy a single new piece of furniture. Shades with depth and warm undertones tend to look the most expensive. These 24 bedroom wall colour ideas cover neutrals, moody tones and soft colours, plus finishes that lift the whole room.
Colours and the mood they create
| Item | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Mushroom and taupe | Quiet luxury |
| Warm white | Fresh and airy |
| Sage and olive | Calm and natural |
| Deep navy and green | Moody and cocooning |
| Dusty pink and terracotta | Warm and flattering |
Warm neutrals
- Try a mushroom or taupe for quiet, hotel-like calm.
- Use a warm off-white with a cream undertone instead of brilliant white.
- Choose greige if you want a neutral that suits both warm and cool fabrics.
- Paint walls a soft oatmeal for a cosy, linen-like feel.
Soft colours
- Go for a dusty sage green for a restful, natural look.
- Try a muted powder blue in a south-facing room.
- Choose a dusty blush pink for a flattering glow.
- Use a soft lavender grey for a dreamy feel.
Moody shades
- Paint walls deep navy for a calm, enveloping bedroom.
- Try forest or bottle green for richness.
- Use a chocolate brown for warmth and depth.
- Choose a charcoal with a warm base for a sophisticated finish.
Earthy tones
- Paint walls terracotta for Mediterranean warmth.
- Try ochre or mustard on one feature wall.
- Use clay pink for an earthy, modern look.
- Choose olive green to pair with wood and brass.
Techniques
- Colour-drench walls, trim and ceiling in one shade.
- Paint the ceiling a lighter tint of the wall colour.
- Add a two-tone wall with a darker lower half.
- Paint an arch or headboard shape behind the bed.
Finishes
- Use a matte or flat finish to hide wall imperfections.
- Try limewash or mineral paint for soft texture.
- Pick eggshell for trim for subtle contrast.
- Test samples on several walls and view them morning and night.
Tip: Always test a large sample patch, at least the size of an A4 sheet, on more than one wall. Light direction changes colour dramatically, and north-facing rooms make cool shades look colder.
