Colours and finishes
- Paint shaker cabinets navy for a classic, timeless look.
- Choose forest green for a rich, natural feel.
- Use charcoal grey for a softer alternative to black.
- Go matt black for a sleek, modern kitchen.
- Pick deep walnut veneer for warm, dark wood.
Contrast and balance
- Pair dark base units with light upper cabinets for a two-tone kitchen.
- Choose white or cream marble-look worktops.
- Use a light, glossy backsplash like zellige tiles to reflect light.
- Add open oak shelves to break up dark runs.
- Keep walls and ceiling light in a smaller kitchen.
Hardware and lighting
- Add brass or aged gold handles for warmth.
- Use under-cabinet LED strips to light worktops.
- Hang pendant lights over the island in brass or glass.
- Choose integrated handles or push-to-open for a minimal look.
- Fit warm 2700K to 3000K bulbs to keep dark colours rich.
Tip: Dark cabinets show dust and fingerprints on high-gloss finishes, so choose a matt or eggshell finish with a washable coating. Make sure under-cabinet lighting is installed by a qualified electrician and kept clear of hot hobs and steam.
