DIY plank options
| Item | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Plywood strips | Cheapest, cut to width |
| Tongue and groove pine | Classic and tight-fitting |
| Shiplap | Defined shadow lines |
| Reclaimed boards | Rustic character |
| Pre-finished planks | Fastest installation |
Materials
- Rip plywood sheets into planks for a budget-friendly ceiling.
- Use tongue and groove pine for a tight, classic finish.
- Choose shiplap for crisp shadow lines.
- Try pre-finished planks to skip painting overhead.
Finishes
- Whitewash pine to keep a low ceiling bright.
- Stain planks warm honey for a cabin feel.
- Paint planks soft white or pale green for a cottage look.
Installation tips
- Run planks across the longest wall to widen the room visually.
- Stagger joints so seams look natural.
- Finish edges with simple trim to hide gaps.
Tip: Locate and mark the joists, then fix every plank into them with a nail gun or screws suitable for overhead work. Wear eye protection when nailing overhead, work from a stable platform or scaffold rather than a chair, and turn the power off at the consumer unit before working around light fittings. Have a qualified electrician refit any lights.
