IKEA Closet Hack: Transform Your Boring Closet Into a Dream Storage Space
A plain reach-in closet can become a fitted, boutique-style wardrobe using affordable flat-pack components. This IKEA closet hack guide shares 10 ideas for planning, building and styling a closet system that fits your space and your clothes.
Common components to use
| Item | Why it works |
|---|---|
| PAX or similar frames | Fitted wardrobe structure |
| Wire baskets | Breathable folded storage |
| Rails | Double hanging for more space |
| Shoe shelves | Angled or flat display |
| LED strips | Light inside the closet |
Plan
- Measure width, depth and height carefully, including skirting and door frames.
- Remove the old doors and fit a curtain or new doors for easier access.
- Choose frames that fit the depth of your closet.
Build
- Combine short and long hanging sections.
- Add pull-out wire baskets for knits and gym kit.
- Fit shoe shelves at the bottom.
- Use fabric boxes on top shelves for seasonal items.
Finish
- Add battery or plug-in LED strips inside the frames.
- Fill gaps with trim or filler panels for a built-in look.
- Swap handles for brass or leather pulls.
Tip: Always anchor tall wardrobe frames to the wall with the supplied fixings, because unanchored units can tip over. Check for pipes and cables before drilling, use two people to lift frames into place, and use low-heat LED lighting kept away from fabric.
