17 Farmhouse Kitchen Cabinet Ideas That Feel Timeless (Not Dated)
Cabinets make up most of what you see in a kitchen, so they decide whether a farmhouse kitchen feels warm and timeless or tired and themed. The good news is that farmhouse cabinets are built on simple, classic shapes that rarely go out of style. The trick is in the color, hardware and how you mix open and closed storage.
Start with the right door style
| Door style | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Shaker | Clean, classic | Almost every farmhouse kitchen |
| Beadboard panel | Cottage, country | Island or lower cabinets |
| Inset | Furniture-like, high-end | Statement kitchens |
| Glass-front | Light, airy | Uppers to display dishes |
Tip: Shaker doors are the safe bet. They work with farmhouse, traditional and modern styles, so they age gracefully.
Paint colors that last
- Warm white or cream. The classic, especially with wood counters.
- Sage green. Soft, earthy and right on trend without feeling like a fad.
- Greige or mushroom. A sophisticated neutral that hides wear.
- Navy or charcoal on the island to anchor a light kitchen.
- Two-tone cabinets: darker lowers and lighter uppers make the room feel taller.
Open and closed storage
- Open wood shelves instead of some upper cabinets. Display plates, jars and bowls you use daily.
- Glass-front uppers for a lighter look than solid doors.
- Plate rack built into a cabinet run.
- Open base shelving under an island for baskets and cookbooks.
- Tall pantry cabinet with pull-out shelves to keep counters clear.
Hardware and details
- Brass cup pulls and knobs. Warm, classic and pair well with sage or cream.
- Matte black hardware for a more modern farmhouse look.
- Bin pulls on drawers and knobs on doors for a traditional mix.
- Furniture feet or a toe-kick detail to make the island look freestanding.
Counters and finishing touches
- Butcher block counters warm up painted cabinets.
- Apron-front (farmhouse) sink as the centerpiece of the cabinet run.
- Simple crown molding to finish the uppers and make cabinets feel built in.
Updating existing cabinets on a budget
- Paint: degrease, sand lightly, prime and use a durable cabinet enamel.
- Swap hardware: the fastest, cheapest way to change the style.
- Remove a few upper doors to create open shelving (fill old hinge holes first).
- Add trim to flat slab doors to create a shaker-style frame.
Farmhouse cabinet FAQ
Are white farmhouse cabinets still in style? Yes, especially warm whites. They are easier to live with than stark bright white.
What wood goes with sage green cabinets? Light oak, walnut and butcher block all look great.
Should I choose open shelves or uppers? A mix: open shelves for everyday items near the sink and range, closed cabinets for everything else.
