How to Host a Festive Outdoor Thanksgiving Party (Even in the Cold)
Eating outside on Thanksgiving can feel magical when guests are warm and comfortable. This guide on how to host a festive outdoor Thanksgiving party (even in the cold) covers heat, light, seating, food and a plan B so the day runs smoothly.
Keep everyone warm
| Item | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Patio heater | Propane or electric, rated for outdoors |
| Fire pit | A gathering point after dinner |
| Blankets | One per chair |
| Seat cushions | Insulate from cold chairs |
| Warm drinks | Cider, cocoa and tea stations |
Plan the space
- Check the forecast a week out and again the day before.
- Choose a sheltered spot near the house and out of the wind.
- Set up a canopy or pergola cover in case of drizzle.
- Have an indoor backup layout ready to move to.
Heat, light and comfort
- Place heaters around the table rather than at one end.
- Drape a blanket on every chair and add cushions.
- Hang string lights overhead and add lanterns on the table.
- Light the fire pit for dessert and conversation.
Food and decor
- Serve food indoors buffet-style and carry plates out so dishes stay hot.
- Use covered dishes and warming trays for sides.
- Decorate with pumpkins, leaves and plaid that can handle a breeze.
- Set out a hot drinks station with cider and cocoa.
Tip: Keep patio heaters and fire pits at the distance the manufacturer specifies from tables, canopies, blankets and decorations, never use them under a closed cover, and have a fire extinguisher nearby. Use outdoor-rated extension cords and keep candles in lanterns.
