How to Make Stunning Mosaic Garden Art – Easy DIY Guide for Beginners
Mosaic garden art adds colour that lasts all year and uses broken tiles, plates and glass that might otherwise be thrown away. This easy DIY guide shows beginners how to make stunning mosaic garden art that survives the weather.
Outdoor mosaic materials
| Item | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Tesserae | Frost-proof ceramic, porcelain or glass tiles |
| Adhesive | Exterior thinset or outdoor-rated tile adhesive |
| Grout | Sanded exterior grout, ideally with additive |
| Bases | Concrete pavers, terracotta pots, cement board |
| Sealer | Penetrating grout and tile sealer |
Step by step
- Choose a frost-proof base such as a paver or cement board.
- Sketch a simple design on the base in pencil.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves and cut tiles with nippers.
- Dry-lay pieces to check spacing and colour.
- Butter each piece with exterior thinset and press it down.
- Keep gaps of 2 to 3 mm for grout.
- Let it cure for at least 24 hours.
- Grout the piece and wipe off haze with a damp sponge.
- Seal the grout once fully dry.
Easy first projects
- Mosaic stepping stones for a path.
- A mosaic-covered terracotta pot.
- A house number plaque.
- A mosaic birdbath top.
- Mosaic bands on an old garden table.
Avoid these mistakes
- Using indoor glue or grout that fails outdoors.
- Leaving the base unsealed so water gets behind tiles.
- Choosing sharp-edged glass for stepping stones people walk on.
Tip: Always wear safety glasses and gloves when nipping tile and glass, wear a dust mask when mixing grout and thinset and work in a ventilated space, sweep up shards carefully away from children and pets, and use smooth-edged tiles for anything people or animals will walk on or touch.
