How to Build a Small Modern Coffee Table on a $50 Budget
A handmade coffee table is a satisfying first furniture project, and it does not need an expensive workshop. This guide shows how to build a small modern coffee table on a $50 budget in 8 steps, using pine boards, hairpin legs and a simple oil finish.
Typical budget breakdown (approximate)
| Item | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Pine boards | Around $20 to $25 |
| Hairpin legs (set of 4) | Around $15 to $20 |
| Wood glue and screws | Around $5 |
| Sandpaper and oil | Around $5 to $10 |
| Total | Roughly $50, depending on local prices |
Prepare
- Decide the size, for example 90 by 50 cm and about 40 to 45 cm high.
- Buy straight, knot-light pine boards and cut them to length or ask the store to cut them.
- Glue and clamp the boards edge to edge to form the top, and leave overnight.
Build
- Screw two battens across the underside to keep the top flat.
- Sand from 80 to 180 grit, rounding the edges slightly.
- Attach the hairpin legs about 5 cm in from each corner with the supplied screws.
Finish
- Apply two thin coats of hardwax oil or a water-based varnish.
- Add felt pads to the feet to protect floors.
Tip: Wear safety glasses and hearing protection when cutting and sanding, and use a dust mask because sanding creates fine dust. Use screws short enough that they cannot break through the tabletop, clamp work securely rather than holding it by hand, and apply finishes in a ventilated room, laying oily rags flat to dry because they can self-heat.
